Besides, close friends who always demand that you<br />celebrate your name in grand style, most confront you with all<br />manner of questions bordering on the concept that your name<br />is supposed to embody. Thus, you are asked whether you<br />were born on the 14th of February or whether you were a by-<br />product of love affair that took place in the month of February.<br />One fact I have come to discover over the years is that people<br />take those that bear the name of Valentine as experts in all<br />known techniques of love, starting with its fundaments to its<br />metaphysics.<br />Despite much research, we cannot tell unarguably the exact<br />date the feast started, nor the route by which it entered into<br />history. Perhaps it is connected to the life of a certain St.<br />Valentine who was said to have suffered martyrdom in Rome<br />as the Church hagiography would want us to believe. Perhaps,<br />as the legend of the saint’s heroic faith says, it grew out of<br />the love shown to prisoners by the saintly Valentine. Perhaps<br />it has to do with the period in the year when birds of the earth<br />look for mates. Perhaps it is another case of substitution of a<br />pagan feast by Christian feast as a subtle way of blighting<br />paganism at the bud. We do not know. Valentine’s Day is part<br />of history whose beginning has been forgotten, and whose end<br />we shall never reach.<br />The popularity of Valentine’s Day could be linked to the nature<br />of the theme it celebrates – love. Writing about love,<br />Archbishop Fulton Sheen called it “the most used, and the<br />most misunderstood word.” The misunderstanding inherent in<br />the nature of love often provokes people to ask questions<br />such as: How much of what we claim as love is love indeed?<br />Does love have different levels and spheres? Is it possible to<br />love our neighbour as ourselves, as the Holy writ prescribes?<br />What is love? These are the questions with which the most<br />comprehensive theories, treatises, and analyses of love find it<br />necessary to begin.<br />To the Greeks, love could be Eros, Philia, and agape. Plato’s<br />ladder of love in the Symposium has different loves for its<br />rungs, up to what we commonly call “Platonic Love”. St<br />Thomas Aquinas distinguishes between love in the sphere of<br />the passion and love as an act of will. The former he assigns<br />to what he calls the “concupiscible faculty” of the sensitive<br />appetite; the latter, to the rational or “intellectual appetite”.<br />Sometimes, people talk about metaphysical, contemplative,<br />material and acquisitive love, etc.<br />Whatever form love takes, it implies a complex psychical<br />experience of strong attraction to, intense desire for, vivid ap­<br />preciation of, a profound interest in, ones object of love. The<br />object of love could be a fellow being, institution, cause or<br />even nature. It involves tender affection, sympathetic<br />understanding, admiration and loyalty, with reference to its<br />object.<br />But apart from a few people who recognize the fact of<br />plurality of love in their analyses, most of us, especially the<br />youth, talk abundantly of love, commonly in the sense of<br />amorous appetite. These are people who confess their loving<br />the object of their love more than their own mothers. Recall<br />the “sugar in my tea” and similar stuff. Our elders consider<br />this form of love to be a form of “possession” or “madness”,<br />and would frown at anyone who would propose it as a fit<br />guide in the choice of marriage mate. They do this, knowing<br />that once the erotic side of love diminishes or fades away<br />altogether, the disinterested element fades too; interest in the<br />other’s happiness evaporates, all tender feeling is eroded, and<br />the one desire is to get away. This is what Lucretius called<br />“erotic befuddlement”. What Dedriot deridedly described as<br />“the voluptuous loss of a few drops of liquid.” It is a spark<br />thrown off by the contact or nearness of two opposite bodies.<br />In pursuit of this type of love there is nothing that human<br />beings have not done, or are not capable of doing. The love<br />portion that some ladies brew for men they suspect of<br />unrequited love has no platonic aim. It is not out of<br />generosity, rather to get the object of their longing, that men<br />spend lots of money in wooing women. Women themselves do<br />as much. To attract men, they dress in manners to arouse<br />precipitate passion. Eyelashes are darkened with gum<br />ammonia. Checks and lips are painted with sticks of minium<br />or alkanet roots. Adjustable eyebrows are used and often<br />pencilled with lampblack or pulverized or sulphuret of<br />antimony, sometimes it is thinned to diverse shapes or shaved<br />off entirely and painted “crescent moons” or other forms.<br />Eyelids are shaded with kohl. All sort of things are rubbed on<br />the face, in the hope that it will make them look beautiful.<br />Some in the villages still wrap their fingernails over night with<br />henna leaves to make them purple. Padded brassieres are<br />used to make the breast look poised and … Breast en­<br />hancement has since become part of beauty regimen. There is<br />no part of the woman’s body, in pursuit of men, that has not<br />been perfected, decorated, refined, stretched and squeezed,<br />bleached, reformed, compacted and shortened.<br />Higher than the afore-described love is what is often called<br />genuine friendship. In this type of love, there is often the<br />predominance of altruistic motives. It springs from mutual<br />admiration. Here, love is thought to precede desire and to<br />determine its wishes. Marriages built upon this type of love<br />are often successful. Mature lovers discover that marriage<br />transcends the act of multiplication of the species or the<br />fantasy of sexual acts. There are some men who think that all<br />a woman appreciates in a man is when he brandishes the<br />erectile organ to her satisfaction. No. Marriage is more than<br />that. It demands deep understanding and maturity from both<br />partners.<br />All the foregoing classifications and distinctions, inexhaustible<br />though, belong to the theory of human love. But the fact of<br />love’s diversity extends to the Christian theory of love.<br />Christianity brought about a basic shift in man’s thinking<br />about love. Christianity sees love not in the emotion or<br />passion, but from the infinite perfection and creativity of God.<br />Writing to the Corinthians (2 Cor 13: 6) St Paul said that<br />“love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in<br />the truth…”God Himself is love (I John 4: 4). “Love ye one<br />another”. In this profound sentence, God summarized all the<br />commandments. Love rules the world and was, perhaps, as<br />Parmenides thought, “the very first thing created by the gods<br />to rule the world”.<br />The key to peace in the world is for men to embrace the<br />ethics of Christ – love. Confucius taught a version of it in his<br />rule of reciprocity (golden rule). Immanuel Kant espoused it in<br />his book, The Metaphysics of Morals in what he called the<br />“Maxims of Categorical Imperative”. All great religions teach<br />it. Until we start to imbibe this golden rule (love), the battle to<br />re-make the world can as well be labelled a utopia.<br />The sooner we use the day of Valentine to promote this type<br />of love, the better the world will become. Here we are again<br />celebrating another Valentine. How do we make it serve the<br />purpose of making the world a better place? Is it for us just a<br />day to buy expensive Valentine’s gifts and flowers and caress<br />one another in the happy ignorance of the true meaning of<br />love? These are the central questions.

How I had three kids in four years –TIMI DAKOLO

In an exclusive chat with The Entertainer at the<br />Congress Hall of Nicon Hilton Hotel, Abuja, recently, the vocal<br />powerhouse, who tied the knot in 2012 to his baby mama,<br />Busola, declared that marriage has transformed him.<br />“Marriage has really transformed me,” Dakolo begins, a soft<br />smile playing across his lips as he speaks, “life is not just<br />what it used to be any more I must confess. I can’t do a lot<br />of things I want to do anymore because now I am married<br />and it has made me more responsible. These days I think for<br />more than just one person. Marriage makes you start every<br />journey with an end in mind and that is the joy of being<br />married.<br />“Even as I speak to you I am thinking of how I will pay school<br />fees and house rent. A lot of responsibility comes with<br />marriage but then, it also comes with a lot of favour;<br />undeserved favour, favour you can’t even explain being<br />showered upon you from left right and centre.<br />“When you are married and your home is stable, it comes with<br />a lot of blessings you can’t explain. People treat you<br />differently, even God Himself brings things your way and you<br />begin to see the world differently because things just click,” he<br />says, snapping his fingers to drive home his point adding,<br />“you can’t even explain why and you don’t know how it<br />happens; that is the truth. Especially if you are at peace in<br />your home, things just begin to click.”<br />Timi says he is grateful to God for the understanding he has<br />with his wife, Busola, the mother of his kids and discloses<br />that one thing he has always prayed to God for is an<br />understanding and caring wife who would understand him and<br />his moods because of his creativity.<br />“Before I got married I prayed to God for a woman who would<br />understand me and my moods because I could be very easily<br />distracted and destabilised so I wanted a woman that would<br />not give me trouble but rather, complement me.<br />“The truth is when I am troubled and distressed I could be the<br />least creative person for as much as four days at a stretch so<br />because I wanted peace in my home, because I wanted<br />somebody that would understand when I tell her that ‘baby,<br />you can’t talk to me now I am writing,’ and she wouldn’t get<br />upset, I had to pray a lot and I thank God I found that person<br />in my wife.<br />“Now you could tell that to some people and they would get<br />very angry and upset with you but my wife does not because<br />she understands and sometimes, when I am busy and the kids<br />are getting in the way she tells them ‘don’t go there, daddy<br />wants to be alone.’<br />“She understands my moods. That is how we are. She is my<br />greatest critique. A man’s greatest achievement is marriage.<br />Marriage has transformed even my music.”<br />Iyawo Mi<br />So dedicated is Timi to his wife that he has dedicated a song<br />to her on his latest album entitled Iyawo Mi.<br />“Yes of course, Iyawo Mi is a song on my soon to be released<br />album,” Dakolo says excitedly. “The single was released a<br />while ago and it is dedicated to my wife. I can’t be singing<br />R&B and not dedicate a song to my wife; it is not possible.”<br />So now that he is married, are the girls still coming after him?<br />He pauses for a while before he responds philosophically<br />quoting a Bible passage: “The Bible says ‘many are the<br />afflictions of the righteous man.’ What I do is that I stay out<br />of trouble and the way I avoid temptation is by sitting in my<br />house and watching football, playing video games and doing<br />music, and I am always so happy at the end of the day.<br />“I always try to push my wife in people’s faces whenever I<br />have the opportunity because when it comes to temptation,<br />no man is as strong as he thinks he is and that is the truth.<br />So if you want to avoid temptation, just sit in your house and<br />don’t forget that our industry is a very unforgiving one; I don’t<br />want scandals.”<br />Idols West Africa<br />The vocal powerhouse also used the opportunity to talk about<br />his experience at Idols West Africa, the platform that gave him<br />a name and a voice and how he never believed he could be so<br />successful musically.<br />“I had big dreams but music was not part of it,” Dakolo<br />recounts, “I stumbled on music basically. Sometimes you<br />stumble on destiny on the road you are taking to avoid it. It<br />began with somebody telling me to go for West African Idols .<br />It was after West African Idols that I now said ‘okay, music is<br />something I just might do’ because in my house those days,<br />you can’t say you want to do music unless you are out of<br />your mind! They will tell you to first return all the fees they<br />paid to get you through school,” he says laughing.<br />Love & Consequences<br />With three successful albums in the kitty, Timi says work is<br />currently ongoing on his next body of work. Commenting on<br />his new album Timi continues: “I am recording a new album<br />entitled Love & Consequences. It is a 14 tracker. I have been<br />in Georgia, Atlanta, recording live with Cohbams because I<br />want my music to have that unique live feel.<br />“Love & Consequences is almost ready. The message is that<br />there are consequences for getting married whether negative<br />or positive. I have a song that is entitled Iyawo Mi which was<br />released a while ago and dedicated to Busola my wife: the<br />video is currently trending on YouTube. I have Wish Me Well ,<br />there is The Vow and there is also Stranded. My Great Nation<br />song is also on this album.<br />“And guess what; I have also started working on the album<br />after this one entitled Ateni’s Grandson which is dedicated to<br />my late grand mum, the woman who raised me.<br />“Ateni’s Grandson is basically about the things she told me<br />about life and a few songs from here and there. There is<br />another album I am also working on entitled The Rock Side of<br />Things. Like I said earlier, marriage will make you start a<br />journey with an end in mind.”<br />No more kids please…<br />And just three years after he tied the knot, Timi reveals that<br />he now has three kids and he is through with making babies:<br />“I have three kids now and I can confidently tell you that my<br />wife and I are done making children; no more kids because I<br />have three already. I am done with making babies.”<br />Three kids in four years, how did he pull it off? “My name is<br />Timi Dakolo and I get away with a lot of things,” he concludes<br />as we both share another round of hearty laughter.

Conse­<br />quently, this week, Showdown features two of Nigeria’s cur­<br />rently raving singles; P square’s Shekini and Oritsefemi’s Dou­<br />ble Wahala, two of Naija’s most popular tracks as at last<br />count.<br />P-SQUARE:<br />Fraternal twins, Peter and Paul Okoye aka P-Square hail<br />from Ifite-Dunu, Anambra State, but were born in Jos,<br />Plateau State. They started off as members of Literary &<br />Debating Society at St Mulumba Secondary School, Jos,<br />Plateau State, mimicking popular acts like Michael Jackson,<br />MC Harmer and Bobby Brown. They formed groups such as<br />MMMP and later MMP aka Smooth Criminals before founding<br />P-Square. In 2001 they emerged winners at the Grab Tha Mic<br />competition sponsored by Benson & Hedges. This culminated<br />in the release of their debut album entitled Last Night. To<br />date they have dropped six studio albums and won several<br />awards and nominations. Shekini is a song from their sixth<br />studio album entitled Double Double, released late 2014.<br />ORITSEFEMI:<br />Self styled Musical Taliban and indigene of Delta State,<br />Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele aka Oritsefemi, was born in<br />Ajegunle, Lagos State, to a polygamous family. So, no matter how popular Double Wahala seems to<br />be, Shekini is better.<br />Shekini more danceable –Okon Emmanuel, entrepreneur<br />Shekini and Double Wahala are very popular songs especially<br />among teens and radio stations. Danny was a 25-year-old electrician working full-<br />time while undergoing 12 hours of dialysis a week to manage<br />an inflammatory kidney disease called IgA nephropathy. He<br />needed a transplant, but none of his family members were a<br />match.<br />"He lost his father to brain cancer in 2012 and their house<br />burnt down on Christmas Day in 2011," Ashley told The<br />Huffington Post. "It was just one thing after the other. Hearing<br />all of that and knowing he was only 25 was a lot for<br />anybody."<br />When asked what compelled her to make such a sacrifice for a<br />stranger, she simply said,<br />"I took the whole process very seriously -- I did my research<br />and everything. But to me, as long as the doctor said I was<br />fine and I was going to be fine and that it would work for<br />Danny, it was like, why not give up a kidney to<br />someone who needs it?"<br />Ashley and Danny were a match throughout each step of the<br />pre-transplant testing. She told HuffPost Weddings that she<br />had been adamant about not meeting Danny and his family<br />until the surgery seemed like a sure thing; up until that point,<br />she had been primarily corresponding with his mom. So in<br />March 2014, they finally met face-to-face with their families<br />at The Cheesecake Factory.<br />"I was extremely nervous -- over-the-top nervous," Ashley<br />said of their first encounter.<br />"But as soon as we sat down and started talking, it was like<br />immediately I just felt like I had known him forever. Everything<br />his mom had told me up until that point was true -- about<br />him being a truly good human being, just a good person all<br />the way around. My dad was very taken aback about how put<br />together he was. He said he could tell he was a genuine<br />person."<br />On April 17, 2014, Ashley and Danny went in for surgery at the<br />University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital in<br />Lexington. Both procedures were successful -- the transplant<br />surgeon told The Courier-Journal that there were no<br />complications in either operation.<br />But it wasn't until after the transplant that Ashley and<br />Danny's bond turned into a romantic one. Ashley cites a<br />Memorial Day Weekend barbecue as the turning point in their<br />relationship.<br />"It was really clear early on that this was 'it,'" she told The<br />Courier-Journal.<br />On Christmas Day 2014, Danny proposed to Ashley in front of<br />his family. She said 'yes,' and the pair is expecting their first<br />child together -- a baby girl they've named Berkli -- in June.<br />"It still doesn't register to me," Ashley said about the crazy<br />year they've had. "Before all of this [attention], we don't really<br />think about our situation. We just live our daily lives. So to<br />relive it all is kind of surreal, but it's awesome."

<img src=" http://sunnewsonline.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/NFF-President-Amaju-Pinnick-110x96.jpg "><br />For Nigeria to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, the<br />current squad of the Super Eagles must give way for younger<br />players that are hungry for success.<br />President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick,<br />made the submission as part of the positives he took away<br />from the recently concluded AFCON tournament in Equatorial<br />Guinea where he officiated as Match Commissioner.<br />The 2017 Africa cup of Nations qualifiers commences in June,<br />and Pinnick believed the current crop of players lack the zeal<br />to represent Africa’s most populous nation, hence his desire<br />to see younger players drafted in.<br />“If you look at most teams today, the players are between the<br />ages of 17 and 22, because these are players that are hungry<br />and they are the players for the future and this is what we<br />lack in the Super Eagles.<br />“There is no hunger in this current Super Eagles team and we<br />are going to sit together and highlight these issues with the<br />technical department, and they will analyse it and see if it is<br />okay for us to implement.<br />“We also have to organize technical study groups and so on<br />and this are some of the plans we have for the team.”<br />Pinnick slammed the current Super Eagles as lacking the<br />‘zeal’ and ‘national morale’ to represent Nigeria.

<img src=" http://sunnewsonline.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/7a9aa196c4b0d2066d0f6a706700d1f2_c0-151-3640-2272_s561x327.jpg "><br />The United States, Britain and France said Wednesday they<br />were closing their embassies in Yemen amid the turmoil in the<br />wake of the Shiite rebels’ takeover of the country.<br />The closures – almost four years to the date since the start of<br />an Arab Spring uprising that ousted Yemen’s longtime<br />autocratic ruler – were an ominous sign for the faltering,<br />U.N.-brokered negotiations between the Houthi rebels and<br />their political rivals, They also threatened to plunge this<br />impoverished Arabian Peninsula country further into<br />international isolation.<br />Yemen has been in crisis for months, with the Iran-linked<br />Houthis besieging the capital, Sanaa, and then taking control.<br />In January, the rebels put U.S.-backed President Abed Rabbo<br />Mansour Hadi and all his Cabinet ministers under house<br />arrest, leading to their resignations. Subsequently, the Houthis<br />– who are followers of the Shiite Zaydi sect in the Sunni-<br />majority Yemen – dissolved parliament and declared they were<br />taking over the government.<br />On Tuesday, the State Department announced it suspended<br />operations at the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa and relocated<br />remaining diplomatic personnel “due to the ongoing political<br />instability and the uncertain security situation.” The embassy<br />had been operating with only a skeleton staff for some weeks<br />amid deteriorating conditions.<br />U.S. officials said the embassy’s closure would not affect<br />counterterrorism operations against al-Qaida’s Yemen branch<br />– considered by Washington to be the world’s most<br />dangerous offshoot of the global terror group. Yemeni officials,<br />however, say the move was likely to curtail U.S. military<br />operations in the country.<br />Yemeni officials said Wednesday that embassy staffers<br />destroyed files and documents and disposed of firearms<br />belonging to the embassy guards. They also handed over<br />Sanaa’s Sheraton Hotel, where staffers had resided for several<br />years, to the United Nations.<br />Also Wednesday, Britain’s Minister for the Middle East Tobias<br />Ellwood urged British citizens still in Yemen to “leave<br />immediately” as his country’s embassy evacuated its staff.<br />The French Embassy said it would close on Friday.<br />“The security situation in Yemen has continued to deteriorate<br />over recent days,” Ellwood said. “Regrettably, we now judge<br />that our embassy staff and premises are at increased risk.”<br />Germany urged its citizens to leave Yemen, Foreign Ministry<br />spokesman Martin Schaefer said Wednesday.<br />The diplomatic missions of many Gulf Arab countries, which<br />backed Hadi and opposed the Houthis, have already evacuated<br />their staff.<br />In Sanaa, the Houthis patrolled the streets armed with<br />Kalashnikov rifles and dressed in a mix of police uniforms and<br />civilian clothes. They sealed off main boulevards and drove<br />around in pickup trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns.<br />Shops closed early and people mostly stayed home.<br />The rebels dispersed several scattered anti-Houthi protests,<br />beating the demonstrators and attacking them with knives as<br />they tried to march toward the U.N. offices, according to<br />witnesses. Several people were arrested, they said. The<br />Yemeni officials and witnesses spoke to The Associated Press<br />on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized<br />to talk to media.<br />Later Wednesday, thousands of Houthi supporters marched in<br />Sanaa, chanting, “Death to America, Death to Israel” –<br />echoing similar slogans from Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.<br />The Houthis, traditionally based in northern Yemen along the<br />border with Saudi Arabia, deny they are backed by the Shiite<br />powerhouse Iran.<br />They also chanted in support of the rebels’ leader, Abdel-<br />Malek al-Houthi, who warned critics Tuesday not to stand in<br />the way of his movement and denounced foreign governments<br />for removing their diplomats.<br />“Whoever harms the interest of this country could see that<br />their interests in this country are also harmed,” al-Houthi said,<br />speaking on the rebel group’s own Al-Masirah TV network.<br />( WASHINGTON TIMES )
